My mixed media pieces are really paintings made with paper. I turn scraps into form and space. I cut them, rip them, alter them, layer, paint and draw into them – exploring texture, shape and color.
In my work, I create both pure abstraction and evocative imagery. I visually explore sensory memories – of places from Firenze to Acadia, images from architectural fragments to ocean water, and textures from blades of grass to stucco walls. I am inspired by change – in emotion, season and circumstance. In my “Diary” series, I show personal evolution over time. And in my “Postcards,” I consider the environmental threats to our rainforests, arctic ice, and cities. I combine a range of media – including paint, acrylic mediums, papers and found materials – to create visual metaphors. Using techniques such as painting, printing, drawing, layering and scraping, I visit the textures, patterns, colors and gestures that I see in nature, urban streets and my personal environment. – Betsy Showstack © 2014 Betsy Showstack.
